Review "True Thai, with its thoughtful recipes and arresting photographs, brings the bright and enchanting spirit of Thailand to life. It is a feast for the eyes and the imagination—a pleasure both to read and to cook from." -James Oseland, editor-in-chief of Rodale's Organic Life and author of Cradle of Flavor   "I'm so happy to see a beautiful, imaginative Thai cookbook by a talented Thai-born chef and cook—it's about time! The location photos transport us to Thailand and the recipes are anchored in Hong Thaimee's knowledge of Thai home cooking and street food riches." -Naomi Duguid, author of Burma: Rivers of Flavor   "Hong Thaimee has become a voice for authentic, modern Thai cuisine and an influencer in the culinary industry. Without a doubt, I will soon be making one of her recipes." -Jean-Georges Vongerichten  "True Thai is pulsating with flavor, color, and passion. The love to which this book is dedicated comes through on every page—a bold welcome to Hong Thaimee's table—TRUE THAT!" -Anita Lo, Annisa   "Hong Thaimee's True Thai is the Thai cookbook we've been waiting for in the United States. Chef Thaimee was a passionate competitor against me on Iron Chef America, but my favorite thing about her book is the inspiration she gets from her family to bring tantalizing flavors to your table." -Bobby Flay, author of Brunch at Bobby's"Hong Thaimee brings humor to tales of her own childhood in Chiang Mai. As you turn the pages of her lush cookbook, you feel as though she's taking you along on a family vacation to Southern Thailand, Bangkok, and New York, and it's a privilege."-Cookbooks365.com"Who can resist a Thai cookbook that takes you beyond the familiar favorites at your corner restaurant, while still being more or less doable on a weeknight (especially if you live near a well-stocked Asian grocer)? I know I can't. Yes, you'll find pad Thai and yum nua in here. But mah mah instant noodles? With crab and Chinese broccoli? Candied salted chiles? Watermelon and Thai basil fruit shake? Hong Thaimee, chef at Ngam in New York, doesn't hesitate to go there, either."-NPR BOOKS"The recipes are very well written and ever enticing."-THE HUFFINGTON POST "True Thai is one of the best Thai cookbooks on the market. . . True Thai is particularly flavorful and healthy. Once you try it, it will become part of your culinary experience." -THE WASHINGTON BOOK REVIEW

About the Author Hong Thaimee, originally from Chiang Mai, Thailand, is chef and owner of Ngam, voted 2014’s number-one Thai restaurant by The Village Voice. If you think the same, fret not, I'm here. I'm not a novice to Thai cooking, as I've cooked approximately 70% of the recipes in Pok Pok and 50% of the recipes in Leela's Simple Thai Food. I've also been to Thailand for a few weeks last year so I know more or less how things should taste. This book arrived a few days ago and I had the ingredients for the Ook Gai so I thought why not give that a spin. It turned out HORRIBLY WRONG. it was very soupy with the 4 cups (1 quarter) of chicken broth, and not salty enough, and definitely not creamy like the pictures stated. I followed the recipe's suggested 20 minute+10 minute cooking time and the amount of liquid in the pot was way too much. I left the stove on to simmer for an hour more to see if the sauce reduced but it's still too watery and definitely not creamy like the picture looks.I'll try more recipes and edit my review, but so far not so good.Edit 1:Cooked the coconut rice with mango today. When I read the recipe I found it weird that she would use jasmine essence instead of pandan, but whatever floats her boat as long as it taste good. Well, after cooking, I can say that it cannot be described with the adjective "good", as the 1tsp of jasmine essence really messed things up. The whole pot of rice was very very very jasminy, and it was quite nasty. Had to throw out the whole pot, and in the future I'll stick with Leela's recipe if I want a sweeter version and the Pok Pok one if I want a slightly salty version. I'm gonna cook the Green curry in a few days and see how that goes, but I'm very skeptical.Edit 2: Made the green curry today. Can't say it's the best green curry I've made, but it's edible. Be sure to only use 2 tablespoons of fish sauce and 2 tablespoons of palm sugar as opposed to the 3 called for in the book. 3 would be waaay too much for just 1 can of coconut milk. Also I find the 8 minute simmering time for a curry is WAY too short. I've tasted it at 8 minutes then at 1 hour and the 1 hour tastes much more flavorful.

Get ready to find some things you never expected to find in a book about wine. Things like regrets, migrant labor, war, financial crises, and post-apartheid economics. Things, too, like following a calling, and doing something even though it makes no sense, and creating the life you imagine for yourself. For the people you'll meet in these twelve chapters, wine does so much more than quench thirst. Wine is how they express themselves to the world. It's how they put food on the table for their families. It's how they carve their niche. Sometimes it's even their tool to fight repression and discrimination. Hungry for Wine is also a memoir about how the author went from simply liking the taste of wine, to tasting it every day, to writing about it 365 days a year, to traveling the world in search of the people and the stories in this book. Some people see the world in a grain of sand. Now you can see it in a glass of wine. This book will change the way you look at wine. Forever.

Hungry for Wine: Seeing the World Through the Lens of a Wine Glass, by Cathy Huyghe

Review "Cathy Huyghe's book is most certainly not a how-to-become-a-wine-connoisseur-in-X-number-of-days, but rather an exploration of what a life that is passionate about wine looks like, feels like and sounds like." -Randall Grahm, Winemaker and Owner, Bonny Doon Vineyard"Cathy is a master storyteller, she makes us dream of sipping those wines she presents, of visiting those places, of meeting those people. A book that invites you to reflect, while reading it with one hand. Keep a glass of wine in the other." -Pedro Ballesteros Torres MW"What an opus! Huyghe gives us a real world with real people, dirt, mold, war, economic dislocation. The unexpected -- a rabbit, octopi, a wine cemetery -- and above all, a people whose hearts have been forged in the furnace of life." -Allegra Jordan, Author of The End of Innocence"Brilliantly written, Hungry for Wine exceeds my expectations in every chapter. It is sincere, refreshing, and significant. Where other writers have failed, Cathy has succeeded in humanizing wine." -Arlene Oliveros, Certified Sommelier, Founder/CEO of World of Wines (WOW), Canada & Philippines

The unexpected -a rabbit, octopi, a wine cemetery - and above all, a people whose hearts have been forged in the furnace of life. Hungry for Wine provides an extraordinary and global lens on the people behind the drops in our glass. I have a new understanding about the people of the land who bring us incredibly unique and diverse wines. After reading HUNGRY FOR WINE, I hope never to drink wine again without a full cup of reverence.

As a transplant to a wine region in Northern Italy I have come to appreciate the back story of the wine and the winemaker in a very different way. Nuances I could never know by simply picking up a bottle at my neighborhood wine shop. The story behind what is in the glass - and, how it made its way there - makes it that much more special. I was especially drawn to the chapters of wine areas I know little about, Patagonia, Syria, even the urban winery in Portland for a different reason. It's where I grew up.I love this line from Chapter 12: "The life a winemaker, in other words, is anything but glamorous." I've come to learn that first hand getting to know the producers in my region. At the heart of it, those making the wine are farmers. With that comes many challenges and it was incredible to see how those play out in difference cultures, from vantage points I never considers. Grazie Mille, Cathy. I look forward to the next installment.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A Terrific Debut Book About Wine By Mark Spivak Finally: a wine book that is not pompous, boring, or written by someone who believes himself or herself to be the God of the grape. In Hungry for Wine: Seeing the World Through the Lens of a Wine Glass, Cathy Huyghe narrates her journey from wine lover to wine writer in a compelling and human way. The book consists of twelve chapters that focus on wine-related stories from around the globe---people and producers the author has visited and bonded with---and each concludes with a tasting note on a specific wine that relates to that chapter. There are some powerful stories here. The first one, “How to Live Your Wine Life With No Regrets,” tells the tale of a 93 year-old wine collector in West, Cambridge, Mass., who has amassed a formidable cellar over the years. He shares a problem common to many of us: he has become more focused on collecting than drinking. As he gives the narrator a tour of his underground cellar, it becomes clear that most of the great bottles are past their prime and undrinkable. In the act of obsessively waiting for the perfect moment to drink each bottle, the man has denied himself that pleasure. The tasting note focuses on the 1970 Rauzan-Gassies, one of the wines the collector displays during the visit. Huyghe tracks down two bottles and finds them to be oxidized to the point of vinegar. She barely needs to draw the parallel---in life, as in wine, you’re far better off seizing the moment while you can best enjoy it.Many of the other tales are just as vivid. Huyghe takes us to a Greek winery struggling to prosper in the midst of the country’s ongoing economic crisis; visits the only producer in Syria, an operation that somehow continues to make wine in the midst of war and revolution; she takes us hiking in Patagonia, and gives us a rare glimpse of the people who are really responsible for the wine we drink---the vineyard workers who endure the arduous and sometimes dangerous job of harvesting grapes.Get Cathy Huyghe’s book and curl up with a glass or two. When you finish, you’ll be much hungrier for wine than when you started.Disclosure: I received a free review copy of this book.

I loved the plot and it was so well written that I found myself being sucked into the story from the very first page. Hale is the type of demon any woman would happily invite into their beds and into their hearts. If you are looking for a demonic book boyfriend look no further, Jameson Hale is your man.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I'll be back for more from Ms. Clay. By Jessica I was invited to a Facebook release party for this book by its author, Michelle Clay. When I read "Angels and Demons" in the description, I knew I'd pick this one up as soon as it came out. The violence and sex aren't overdone. Instead, both are used equally to keep the action moving. The quick pace, and the fact that it's 66 pages, made this book a fast and easy read. I finished it in two days. I love shorter works, and this is why. I don't feel like the book was missing anything. Could it have been expanded? Probably. But I think the author did a great job of giving only what I needed to cue descriptions (instead of fluffing page count with descriptions, I hate that). I was never confused about where the characters were or what was happening. I like succinct writing, and I feel this author does it well. And although the book does not end on a cliffhanger (the main conflict is resolved by the end so you're certain what happens next), the author does leave an opening for more adventures with Hale. I love that, books that leave it open for you to decide to read more from the author based on the writing and story itself. It is, in my opinion, a mark of confidence and honesty.I'll be back for more from Ms. Clay.

Little I've read most of Ms. Clay's previous novels and I find myself not only enjoying her work immensely, but really looking forward to her next release.'Hale's Angel' bears all the trademarks of the author's previous work; skilfully handled pacing, erotically-charged plot-lines, and well-rounded characterisation. The main characters are sympathetic and likeable, and the progression of their relationship is both believable and very exciting. Must confess I developed quite a literary crush on Mr. Hale- he's my favourite of the author's Byronic heroes. I'd love to explore Hale & Cera's world further... Fingers crossed for a sequel!

There were several mistakes in the writing.(Author) If you had an editor review this, they need to be fired. I gave this book 3 stars because, it was an original story yet the plot was missing a couple of key points for me. The mistakes, repeating the same stuff several times, and one part made it sound like she was drying off after a shower from a run, then she was in the same skirt running again..? It just didn't flow how I would have liked it too.

A run, a tall, handsome younger man and a storm that throws the two of them together sets the stage for this steamy story. This is the perfect quick read when you need an escape. Tastefully written. I look forward to more from Elizabeth Parker.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Grave Decision ... By Lori from AZ My review is not a "5" due to the subject matter. Keeping an open mind in today's society can be challenging for us all. The author takes us through Virginia's reflective prowess, indicating her images of how things were. The contrast between audience and presenter is interesting, resembling how families truly are. The right to decide? You decide for yourself.

Based on Babel's own diaries that he wrote during the Russo-Polish war of 1920, Red Cavalry is a lyrical,  unflinching and often startlingly ironic depiction of the violence and horrors of war. A classic of modern fiction, the short stories are as powerful today as they were when they burst onto the Russian literary landscape nearly a century ago. The narrator, a Russian-Jewish intellectual, struggles with the tensions of his dual identity: fact blends with fiction; the coarse language of soldiers combines with an elevated literary style; cultures, religions and different social classes collide. Shocking, moving and innovative, Red Cavalry is one of the masterpieces of Russian literature.Pushkin Collection editions feature a spare, elegant series style and superior, durable components. The Collection is typeset in Monotype Baskerville, litho-printed on Munken Premium White Paper and notch-bound by the independently owned printer TJ International in Padstow. The covers, with French flaps, are printed on Colorplan Pristine White Paper. Both paper and cover board are acid-free and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified.

Review

"One of the great stylistic accomplishments of the 20th century... [and] Mr. Dralyuk’s is simply the best translation available." — The Wall Street Journal

"A classic series of wartime sketches in a translation that emphasizes their lyricism and dark comedy. . . Though the stories are brief and deliver a clear message about the frustrations of battle, Babel's rhetoric is never plainly parable- or fablelike; he uses a blunt realism to sketch out scenes that can have a variety of resonances. Writing about war has changed with the times, but war hasn't, and these stories from nearly a century ago remain grimly current. Short but emotionally deep studies of life during wartime." — Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)

"Red Cavalry remains one of the most powerfully detailed and revealing depictions of a legendary people living through one of the most famously violent experiments of the modern age. . . Babel’s characters are stoic yet passionate, savage yet sophisticated, prone to blind, obstinate rage in one moment, and to sensitive reflection and acts of kindness in the next." — MAKE Literary Magazine "Red Cavalry is one of Russia’s great books, up there with Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, Chekhov, Bulgakov, Turgenev, Gogol, Pushkin, Gorky, Solzhenitsyn. Babel’s brief career is marked by the depth, truth, and vitality of what he was able to complete. Boris Dralyuk’s translation will earn Babel new admirers and place him securely in this canon for readers of Russian literature in English." — Los Angeles Review of Books

"Casual violence ('[he] grabbed her hair, bent back her head and smashed her face with his fist') alternates with beauty, sometimes in the same sentence ('We fled without staining our swords crimson with the wretched blood of traitors')… This translation is of the first 1926 edition, before censorship and the author’s own revisions altered the text." — Publishers Weekly"Babel’s narrative concision and his ability to shift registers, from the prosaic to the poetic and back, are riveting. . . Babel prefigures the sensibilities of David Simon, juxtaposing grit, gore, humor, and beauty—in a very different kind of ghetto."  — Daniel Berchenko, Publishers Weekly Staff Pick"Babel was a literary chameleon – able to vividly capture the voices and characters he met during the brutal years of the Polish-Soviet War (1919-21), where nations barely born were fighting over borders soon to be forgotten. The stories here are gory and profane, funny and disturbing, filled with the blood, anguish and up-close horrors of one of the last wars in Europe fought with sabers and horses... Red Cavalry is an indictment of the banality of armed conflict through the voices of commissars and idealists, revolutionaries and soldiers alike. It should be required reading in every high school, in every nation where people still think wars are worth fighting." - Paul Richardson, Russian Life Magazine "Isaac Babel’s Red Cavalry, now granted an afterlife in Boris Dralyuk’s lyrical and fluid translation…" - Nirmal Dass, First Things

About the Author Isaac Babel (born 1894) was a short-story writer, playwright, literary translator and journalist. He joined the Red Army as a correspondent during the Russian civil war. The first major Russian-Jewish writer to write in Russian, he was hugely popular during his lifetime, respected by the Communist authorities and the public alike. But he fell to Stalin's purges, and was murdered in 1940, at the age of 45. Boris Dralyuk is Assistant Professor in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at UCLA. He has translated Leo Tolstoy's How Much Land Does a Man Need and co-translated Polina Barskova's The Zoo in Winter: Selected Poems, and is the co-editor, with Robert Chandler and Irina Mashinski, of the forthcoming Anthology of Russian Poetry from Pushkin to Brodsky.

Chris Babel's Red Cavalry is a remarkably candid look at a little known subject of the Bolshevik's effort to export their revolution to Europe via Poland. His writing is very much in the style of Dostoevsky and Tolstoy in that he cuts through to the heart of the matter in a very subtle manner, and vividly describes the drive, actions, and sufferings of those involved in this conflict.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Near to Perfect By Eric Maroney Russian-Jewish writer Isaak Babel's collection of stories, Red Cavalry, comes close to perfection in many ways. In terms of theme, tone, pacing, and momentum, Babel gets everything right. The collection follows the exploits of a Cossack cavalry unit in its fight against the Poles. Although war features heavily in the stories, it is merely the focal point of the action. Babel takes characters from diverse backgrounds, experiences, political and religious stances and shades, and gives them a voice in his tales. It is no wonder that Babel did not survive Stalin. A mind and creatively so vast and encompassing could never fit into an ideology no matter how broadly defined.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Much to savor here. Fine translation. By Paul E. Richardson Pushkin Press continues to create books that are not only fine translations (spot comparisons find Dralyuk to be more fluent and truer to Babel’s voice than previous translations), but finely made books. This volume is compact and beautifully bound. It fits nicely in a coat pocket and I found myself carrying it around to savor while in waiting rooms or in coffee shops. And there is much to savor here. For Babel was one of the finest writers of the Soviet era. Unfortunately, like Mandelstam, Bulgakov and far too many others, his vast talent was sent to an early grave by murderers who fashioned themselves as protectors of the common good.Babel was a literary chameleon – able to vividly capture the voices and characters he met during the brutal years of the Polish-Soviet War (1919-21), where nations barely born were fighting over borders soon to be forgotten. The stories here are gory and profane, funny and disturbing, filled with the blood, anguish and up-close horrors of one of the last wars in Europe fought with sabers and horses. But there is also a taste of magical realism here. Roads die and villages bleed, the world itself seems to moan and suffer from the carnage wrought on its fertile soil.No one is spared Babel’s goring and, more than anything, Red Cavalry is an indictment of the banality of armed conflict through the voices of commissars and idealists, revolutionaries and soldiers alike. It should be required reading in every high school, in every nation where people still think wars are worth fighting. As reviewed in Russian Life magazine.
