Portraits and Landscapes is an eclectic collection of short stories about all of us. The first stories in the collection are about failed romance and how many of us constantly and painfully search for connection in our lives. Other stories take us across the globe, and speak in a variety of voices, which give us brief glimpses of individuals who struggle to make sense of our world. The human beings described in these stories will make you laugh, weep and sometimes they’ll make you throw up your hands in utter disbelief.

Intriguing debut collection of short stories by Felicity Harley By Kirkus Review The scope and interior quality in each of these stories, in differing ways, creates a compelling collection. There was not one I didn't find interesting or that lost me along the way. Felicity Harley's deep sympathy and insight into diverse human experience brings each one to life.I found the first four stories in the collection quite different than the second half. The mysterious muted sense of hurt and inequity is beautifully rendered, the simplicity in the telling deceptive for each piece is deeply told. The characters seem to drift on currents they can't resist, searching and restless and helpless in the grip of love. The language I found to be sensuous and luscious, the stories' movement flowing easily and naturally. The descriptiveness combined with an interesting imprecision was fascinating, as were the scents, tastes, sounds and impressions introduced. I totally loved each and every one of them. Of them, I think I most enjoyed Love and Persia, The Art Dealer, and The Death of a Coat. Some really great knock you dead lines -...some people kill you, it's not their fault, and it's not yours, but they kill you - and sometimes you kill them.a slow awakening to the old Persia she had read about, and it brought satiety to her hunger...The second half They/Them/Us introduced another mood - more conscious and underpinned by moral concerns. I liked all of them once again. Some read like cautionary tales, narrated with a sense of imparting a message - none hit you over the head with the moral, intriguing journeys into other places and other lives, creating empathy for even the unsympathetic. Pon de Wall, Ben, The Wine of Life and In the Pursuit of Happiness stood out, Your Daughter Tasted Like Fish both beautiful in its love, and devastating in its conclusion. Some like The Survivalists, Divers and Floaters and First Ladies, full of interesting insights, make statements but are so interesting and unforced that they work. "She couldn't help being a diver; it was what made her happy," struck a responsive chord in me, as "the race they began together as equals, still greatly favored him," also did.A marvelous debut collection by this writer of ability and promise.

Raymond Carver’s third collection of stories, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, including the canonical titular story about blindness and learning to enter the very different world of another.  These twelve stories mark a turning point in Carver’s work and “overflow with the danger, excitement, mystery and possibility of life. . . . Carver is a writer of astonishing compassion and honesty. . . . his eye set only on describing and revealing the world as he sees it. His eye is so clear, it almost breaks your heart” (Jonathan Yardley, Washington Post Book World).

Cathedral (Vintage Contemporaries), by Raymond Carver

Amazon.com Review It was morning in America when Raymond Carver's Cathedral came out in 1983, but the characters in this dry collection of short stories from the forgotten corners of land of opportunity didn't receive much sunlight. Nothing much happens to the subjects of Carver's fiction, which is precisely why they are so harrowing: nothingness is a daunting presence to overcome. And rarely do they prevail, but the loneliness and quiet struggle the characters endure provide fertile ground for literary triumph, particularly in the hands of Carver, who was perhaps in his best form with this effort.

Review 'All the stories in Cathedral are different; some funny, some hauntingly sad. Each has its own individual and curious power' Daily Telegraph

From the Inside Flap "A dozen stories that overflow with the danger, excitement, mystery and possibility of life...Carver is a writer of astonishing compassion and honesty...his eye set only on describing and revealing the world as he sees it. His eye is so clear, it almost breaks your heart."--Jonathan Yardley, "Washington Post Book World "Cathedral contains astonishing achievements, which bespeaks a writer expanding his range of intentions."--"The Boston Globe "A few of Mr. Carver's stories can already be counted among the masterpieces of American fiction...Cathedral shows a gifted writer struggling for a larger scope of reference, a finer touch of nuance." --Irving Howe, front page, "The New York Times Book Review "Clear, hard language so right that we shiver at the knowledge we gain from it." --Thomas Williams, "Chicago Tribune Book World "Carver is more than a realist; there is, in some of his stories, a strangeness, the husk of a myth." --"Los Angeles Times

Stories included: "Feathers" "Chef's House" "Preservation" "The Compartment" "A Small, Good Thing" "Vitamins" "Careful" "Where I'm Calling From" "The Train" "Fever" "The Bridle" "Cathedral"

Glorious Cathedral By Rocco Dormarunno It is a cruel, un-poetic injustice, that Raymond Carver's life was tragically cut short just when his stories began to take on glimmers of hope that were nowhere to be seen in his earlier collections. When this book first came out, I was eager to read new stories from my favorite "minimalist" (isn't there a better word these days than "minimalist"?) writer. Instead, I was reading stories about compassion, good-natured friendships, and even salvation and forgiveness. Sure there were still the choppy sentences, quick observations, and weighty silences. But it was different. Many of the stories, not all, ended with an unusual (for Carver) sense of closure, even understanding. As so many reviewers have noted, the title story is just glorious. The narrator, a sarcastic and distant husband, finds human contact in the strangest circumstance. And when he does, he simply states, "It was like nothing else in my life up to now." Simple, but it leaves a serious lump in my throat each time I read it.

35 of 36 people found the following review helpful. What else is there? By M. Perea Unlike so many writers who came before him, Carver cuts to the bone--with a sharp, jagged knife. Sometimes what you find there isn't what you were looking for: the epiphanies aren't astounding; you're not going to scream anything (especially not Eureka!). No, Carver will, though, leave you nodding, talking to yourself ("It's just like that, isn't it?"), as you fill your glass and wonder why you were fooled by the gloss and shimmer of modern living. "A Small, Good Thing," "Feathers," "Cathedral"--these are contemporary masterpieces. You know they are because when you're done reading them you can't tell whether you've been cheated or rewarded beyond your investment--it's the latter, it's the latter! What do you give to a short story? An hour, maybe? Usually, you give less. What do you hope to take with you? A smile? A smirk? Certainly, no answers? Ah! But, guess what? Carver answers questions nobody who is well paid and well fed and not dying for a drink wouldn't ever think of asking. Not that you have to be desperate to get it. But if you are (in your own secret, silent way), then read these stories. The flowers won't be any brighter, the sky any clearer, when you're done. But you'll see yourself a bit more clearly (more honestly, I almost want to say, but how many of us do that?) and maybe understand those people you've never understood, who don't waste too much time trying to amuse themselves.

32 of 35 people found the following review helpful. Essential By C. Ebeling There are a lot of people out there who want to tell you what to think about Raymond Carver. Shut the door on them, read CATHEDRAL and make up your own mind. This is a strong collection of stories; I think it bears comparison to Joyce's DUBLINERS. Each story is separate from another, but together they build a cohesive vision of the dusky corners of life in the later half of the 20th century. Sure his fiction is littered with alcoholics, divorces, and failure, but he finds the sympathetic quality that keeps you reading. In terms of structure, he creates a setting and exposition according to conventional rules of story construction, then subverts the climax into the protagonist's interior, so that the action is really about an invisible turning point in a life, when something goes out of it or lanes are switched, when self knowledge is made or lost. You would think that would mean so many characters stepping up to the plate and getting hit with the same ball, but each story is unique. The collection has variety and texture; it has heart without sentimentality. The prose is clean and undecorative, but never sterile. Carver gets it right; he should not be blamed for the plethora of boring contemporary literary fiction that has tried to ape him ever since he took the world's notice.

The stories were emotionally moving and refreshing to read. They were short, but it took nothing away from their meaning. I kept finding myself thinking about them even after I closed the book. They take place in Australia, so I wasn't quite sure about some of the things referenced in the book, but it didn't take much time to look them up or just put two and two together to figure them out. C. G. Freeman is quite a talented author.

This book describes the first comprehensive experimental research program on an individual who exhibits exceptional memory. Rajan Mahadevan, the subject of these investigations, won a place in the Guinness Book of Records for reciting pi to 31,811 decimal places, can learn matrices up to size 20 X 20, and can produce memory spans above 60 for digits. Utilizing the methodology and theories of modern cognitive psychology, the authors systematically investigated Rajan's memory skills. A wide range of experiments and tests were conducted with Rajan and four control subjects. These include memory span tests for digits and letters, memory for various kinds of non-numeric information, tests of working memory, learning and retention of numeric matrices, memory and visual searches of the digits of pi, and lexical decision tasks with the digits of pi. The authors describe how they came to understand the way Rajan stored and now retrieves the decimal digits of pi, how he learns and retrieves matrices, and how he encodes and retrieves digits in a memory span task. Although his strategy for memorizing and retrieving digits is unique in the literature on people with extraordinary memory, the authors show how their investigations of Rajan contribute to our understanding of memory.

Review

This study is unique in that it is the first systematic study of the memorization process of such large sets of well-defined material; earlier works only investigated sets of 32 words, so the current material is 300 times larger than any other memory-span tasks that have been studied....Most useful for those who want to examine an in-depth study of memory, including types of tasks and experimental controls that were used.—CHOICE

"That record stood until March 9, 1987 when another memorist (Hideaki Tomoyori) recited 40, 000 digits of pi". This book in most part is the clinical account of Rajan's memory ability and processes. Also included in this book are other control subjects GN, DA, DW, MD, TH. In about a 3-yr. period of time Charles P. Thompson, Thaddeus M. Cowan, Jerome Frieman conducted a battery of tests and worked closely with Rajan. Rajan has proven himself worthy to be in the line with other great memorists.Contents:Preface1 Rajan The Person2 Memory Span and Memory Load Tasks3 Non-Numeric Performance4 Number Matrices5 Memory Search6 Priming Digit Strings8 Comparison With Other Memorists9 Overview And Interpretation Of Rajan's PerformanceReferencesAuthor IndexSubject IndexThis is a list of Chapters, there is much more information in the sub-chapters. Furthermore, check ... Memory Search by a Memorist- for complete chapter-sub chapter listing. This book has a tremendous amount of information. Numerous memory tests ranging from memory span, mean memory Span, mean Recall, mean organization measures, mean study time and recall, mean time per matrix, median search times, theoretical median encoding/production time, and more. There are numerous charts and graphs comparing Rajan with the test subjects, also contained are tests on Rajan himself. As you can tell, there is a lot one can learn from this book. The beginning of this book is an introduction to Rajan. Rajan himself writes the autobiography in the beginning of the book. Also learned from the autobiography is Rajan's middle name "Srinivasan". "He is named after a distant cousin who perhaps was India's most famous mathematician, Srivinvasa Ramanujan". Following the autobiography are only brief accounts of interviews NBC, radio, 60 minuites, etc. Also most memorable is the sub-chapter entitled "The "Larry King Show", a very amusing story. Then some information about Rajan the person and his schooling. The meat of the book is the memory experiments. Also contained in chapter 8 of this book is a brief comparison of Rajan to other well-known memoirists, Inaudi, Diamandi, Arnould, Ruckle, Bergh, Finkelstein, Isihara, professor Aitken, Shereshevskii, VP, SF and DD, TE, and last Bubbles P.There is information regarding Ericsson's Theory of Skilled Memory and how it pertains to Rajan. The reference section also gives valuable information. I found some valuable books and papers catalogued here.I did not want to involve myself in the work of detailing information that is contained in this book because of its length and scope. Because of the previous reviews, and I wanted other memory enthusiasts to have a handle on what to expect from this book. This book is more of a clinical account of Rajan's ability and not the most pleasant of reading material. However, there is a terrific amount of experiments and information in this book. I learned how to conduct different memory experiments, understand memory function, also learned about the uses of "rote" memory. I urge anyone interested in memory read this book.

Insects always make my skin crawl, and his last two short stories and Violet Eyes were disturbingly scary and great reads. Can't wait to see what he does next. This story gave me a great buzz, just wish it was longer.

I enjoyed reading these shorts so much, I've read them two more times since! Lynn Lamb has a way with her prose that really causes you to delve into the depths of its meaning...and life. Very well written. This woman has talent. Unequivocally recommend!

No apocalypse or nuclear winter is destroying people's lives, though death is a central theme. For those who say an author is playing with fire when he or she ventures into a different genre, I counter that is absolute nonsense. I for one am quite pleased to see Lamb write something different. These stories are well written and are very different from each other. The theme of death may be a constant, but the plot, settings, and characters are distinctly unique. This was a pleasant surprise and I hope Lamb explores more genres and topics in her future writing endeavors. Everyone will have his or her personal favorites; for me "Double Entendre" claims the top spot. I enjoyed it more the second time I read it, even after I knew what was going on. If you're looking for something different to read, or something different by Lamb, I highly recommend this small volume.

I won't say I was completely satisfied when I read these stories - I still wanted MORE - but each was fully realized and complete in and of itself. They left me thinking, and I can't think of any better end result to reading a story. The prose is beautiful, and the stories are each very different while exemplifying the very creative title. I recommend it!
