Versatile and Timely Help with Bullying By Elizabeth Horton-Newton, Author I was looking for a book about bullying for my granddaughter when I came upon “Inner Giant” by Frank Letras. Bullying has become so prevalent in our society and has touched so many lives that I wanted to prepare her for the possibility it could happen to her. This is actually a collection of short stories, poetry, pictures, and so much more. The best part is that it is set up for adults and children in an easily identifiable format. I was amazed at the versatility of the information included. There were stories I could share with my 8-year old granddaughter as well as others appropriate for my 15-year old grandson. Some of the stories and art are amusing others very serious. With an easy to follow color coded guide I could choose what to share with either child based on their age and their experience. Whether your family is being impacted by bullying or you are just a concerned parent or grandparent, teacher or friend, this is an excellent way to introduce a child to the possible perils they might face. It’s also a wonderful way to open up a dialogue with a child who might be reticent to discuss being bullied. I am so glad I found this book! Brilliant!

Find your INNER GIANT By Anita Kovacevic Some books do not offer an escape from reality, but they do help you deal with reality, and inspire you to help others do the same. This is one of such books. Bullying and abuse in all their forms are never an easy topic, will not make your summer more fun, and a book about it may not be something you would give someone as a gift with a shiny bow and in colourful wrapping paper. But the point is - this book talks about such difficult topics through stories (many based on true events), essays, poetry, illustrations, paintings, photos and songs, and even worksheets and project ideas for classroom use. The main goal of this book is to help people realize that being bullied or abused is not something you should be ashamed of, but something that must be dealt with. It inspires people to help those around them, be they the bullied or even bullies seeking attention, as well as to help themselves, by awakening our inner giants, our inner strength, the kindness we all possess. Being one of the contributors, I may be biased in my review, but I have already seen its positive effect on people as it was being created. There is something for everyone in Inner Giant, and whether you are a teacher, any kind of an educator, a parent or a grandparent, you will find something in this book to share with your family and friends, and especially those we cherish the most, and should protect the most - our children.

Good book in approximation and harmonic analysis on spheres and balls By Yu Guang Wang This is a book of Feng Dai and Yuan Xu who are both experts in approximations on spheres and balls. It contains the recent (up to 2013) progress in approximation by localized kernel on the sphere and weighted approximation as well as the introduction to the quadrature rules on the sphere, where the latest proof by Bondarenko et al. of the existence of spherical design is included.

Wessex Tales is an 1888 collection of tales written by Thomas Hardy, many of which are set before Hardy's birth in 1840. Through them, Thomas Hardy talks about nineteenth century marriage, grammar, class status, how men and women were viewed, medical diseases and more. From Library Journal Hardy tests the skill of any narrator. Not only must the reader dramatize differences of age, sex, region, and class among the characters who inhabit the fictional county of Wessex in the last century, but the straight narration must also showcase the eloquence of Hardy's prose. Vincent Brimble manages all this with ease. Which is fortunate, since the seven uneven tales here might seem downright dull in print. The first and best piece, "The Three Strangers," pulls out all the stops: a violent storm on the downs, three mysterious strangers who seek shelter in a shepherd's cabin where a rousing christening party is in progress, and the booming of a cannon to announce the escape of a prisoner nearby. In other stories (e.g., "Fellow Townsmen") the characters seem wooden, with plots turning too much on coincidence. Woven through all, however, are lively descriptions of life in Somerset 50 years or so before Hardy's time: accounts of milking cows all day in a dark dairy ("The Withered Arm"), smuggling tubs of brandy over the cliffs ("The Distracted Preacher"), and preparing for the anticipated invasion of Napoleon ("A Tradition of 1804"). Review Hardy's novels, in my experience (admittedly a long time ago, when I was going through a serious misery-lit phase), are emotional marathons. They leave you drained, desolate, in shock but ultimately satisfied that you finished the course. Ever since listening to Clare Tomalin's biography, The Time-torn Man, I've been meaning to dig out Tess, Jude, Bathsheba, Eustacia and the rest of the Wessex clan, but it will be a mission. I need an incentive. Here it is. Five minutes into the second tale, The Three Strangers, you can feel the old Hardy magic beginning to work its spell. The scene has been set, where else but on his favourite stamping ground (trudging ground might be a better word), the bare, dark, rain-sodden, wind-lashed heath five miles from Casterbridge (Dorchester to you), where 'the tails of little birds trying to roost on some scraggy thorn were blown inside out like umbrellas'. In a small, lonely hut, shepherd Fennel, his dairymaid wife and 19 guests are celebrating the birth of a new baby beside a crackling fire with mead, victuals, music and dancing. Then comes a knock at the door. 'Walk in!' cries our merry host, the latch clicks and in comes a stranger, 'dark in complexion and not unprepossessing as to feature', hat 'hung low over his eyes', which take in the room 'with a flash more than a glance' and like what they see. 'The rain is so heavy, friends, that I ask leave to come in and rest awhile,' he says in a deep, rich voice. Leave is given and a pull of the mead mug, and minutes later there's another knock, and in comes a second dripping stranger, who turns out to be the hangman on his way to Casterbridge to top a sheep-stealer in the morning. I'd forgotten what a consummate yarn-spinner Hardy is. Roald Dahl's end-of-story twists are famous, but Hardy's tales surprise you all the way through, holding your attention as firmly as old Solomon Selby does his audience's at the tavern in A Tradition of 1804. As soon as they see him take his pipe from his mouth and smile into the fire from his inglenook seat, they know what's coming. 'The smile was neither mirthful nor sad, not precisely humorous nor altogether thoughtful. We who knew him recognised it in a moment. It was his narrative smile.' And thus begins the wonderful tale of young Selby's encounter on a Wessex clifftop with Old Boney himself, recce-ing the long-planned invasion of England with one of his Frenchie generals. Spectacular Stories By HardyBoy64 I'm convinced that Thomas Hardy is one of the greatest writers in the English language because he mastered so many different literary genres. He was a master poet, and his novels have received great attention, as they should have. His short stories, however, seem to have received less attention, which is a shame. These stories are beautiful examples of how well-written literature can capture the fragility of life, affairs of the heart, and human sentiments which Hardy masterfully couches in the cultural and regional traditions and lifestyles.My favorite story here is called "Fellow-townsmen" where Hardy shows us town life mixed with love and the many regrets associated with it. These are stories of hangings, mystic manifestations, ghost-like appearances, foreigners and smugglers all in the English rural landscape of Wessex. Hardy portrays the ever-changing life in this countryside through characters whose lives are like flower blooms blown around in the Wessex wind.Highly Recommended reading! Also read the other collection of short stories by Hardy called "Life's Little Ironies".

I used to think that O'Henry (nee William Sidney Porter) specialized in the 'twist in the tale', also called 'O'Henry twist'. But now I'd say Hardy beats him hollow. The bonus is the usual rich description of locale - the land, the flora & the fauna, the distinctive characteristics of the people (both physical and as to the disposition). Once you get the taste, Hardy has this uncanny ability to keep you mesmerized; even in tales which are not 'mystery stories' in the conventional sense, a Hardy tale is as good as (or better than) any page turner. It keeps your attention riveted, and you can almost feel the terrain and the people as if walking around you...

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Brilliant Storyteller By CJA I read a couple of Hardy's novels 40 years ago and forgot just how good this guy is. He can write short stories too. They tend to be leisurely affairs, longer and more deliberate than you commonly find in this post-Hemingway world. But after a slow beginning he draws you in and you are hooked. Sometimes there is a surprise ending; usually there is some emotional wallop at the end. His heroes tend to be common rural folk and he likes to set his stories in the early 1800s, though the collection was published in 1888.For the most part, Hardy is a critic of conventional morality and social constraints. As a consequence, his stories play well to the modern reader.Magnificent work.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Professor Challenger in 10 Adventures By dyfdd I received this book via LibraryThing as part of their monthly Early Reviewer program. I should start by saying that I do not enjoy short story anthologies, and rarely read them. But I was interested in this anthology because it contained stories about Professor Challenger, a favourite character of mine, and I had read JR Campbells 'Gaslight Grotesque: Nightmare Tales of Sherlock Holmes'.This anthology contains 10 stories from a mix of British, American and Canadian authors and overall I enjoyed it. However, one thing which irritated me was all the stories re-used Challengers character traits of abrasiveness, rudeness, etc. In some of the stories this was helpful in story setup but in others it seemed to be the only way the author could describe him, Stephen Volk's Shug Money being an example.My favourite stories were To One Table, The Fool's Sea, and Time's Black Gulf. Josh Reynolds novel 'Phileas Fogg and the War of Shadows' is on my wishlist, so I was delighted to have the opportunity to read something of his in Time's Black Gulf. It borrowed creatures from HP Lovecraft's world, which now seems to be a given in this genre of anthologies, but as a fan of Lovecraft I find that bonus. Also, Reynolds did not reiterate those Challenger characther traits which plagued the other stories, but then Challenger was "not himself" for most of the story.To One Table, by JR Campbell, brought us back to the effects of Challenger's discovery of the Lost World with an idea that reflects our modern understanding of the dangers inherent in discovering new species. The Fool's Sea by Simon Kurt Unsworth takes us out onto the high seas, where Challenger and Malone face-off against the perils awakened by man's technology.My least favourite stories were Hind & Horn and King of the Moon. King of the Moon borrows from HG Wells and his The First Men in the Moon, and was my least favourite story as it seemed like it was written in a rush. To make it worse it had two characters, Jimmy Major and Jimmy Minor, who reminded me of the Thing One and Thing Two characters from the Dr Seuss book. I found nothing redeeming in this story at all.Hind & Horn started well for me as it was set in Ireland, my home and it had a refreshingly different story device than the other collected stories. But it felt weak and, to be fair to it, I came back and reread it after finishing the anthology, concerned that it was dislike of short stories that was colouring my opinion. But on the second read it did not get any better.The remaining stories were all enjoyable. Professor Challenger and the Crimson Wonder by Guy Adams & James Goss reminded me of HG Well's War of the Worlds. The story used telegrams between the characters to tell the story, which worked well. Out of the Depths by Andrew J Wilson put me in mind of an Indiana Jones adventure, only because it included Nazi's and a jungle setting, although it also pitched in Jules Verne's 'Journey to the Center of the Earth' as well as a famous villain from a HG Wells novel. The Shug Monkey by Stephen Volk I found the worst for using the abrasiveness, rudeness character trait, but despite this irritation I enjoyed the story. The plot examines what the future holds and finishes with an open ending inviting further stories. The Eye of the Devil by Mark Morris brings us to dangers emanating from a mine that put me in mind of Professor Quatermass in 'Quatermass and the Pit' for some reason. The Crystal Minders by John Takis was a neatly written story that I very much enjoyed for that reason, and is retold by Professor Summerlee to Malone.As mentioned by Charles Perpolec in the anthologies Introduction Professor Challenger is not as well known as many other fictional characters that came from novels of the time, or from the early days of science fiction. But he has so much potential to be exciting and engaging in his adventures, as is shown in this anthology. Hopefully we will see him return again.

Poepoe Professor George Edward Challenger has been a favourite character of mine for dozens of years, yet until recently his appearance in print has been fleeting outside the canon works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This is a terrific anthology of short stories, some better than others, yet all allow us to revisit the Professor in his prime. The tales leave us wanting to see more of the Great Professor and I certainly hope he shall take center stage again in the near future.

This anthology brings the spotlight on the Lost World hero in a variety of great short stories. I hope there are more volumes in the future.

It's a rather short book even for this series, but sausage fanciers would be mollified by a number of pages of recipes at the end. The illustrations are as usual in this series. excellent.Allen says that sausage always has its protein cut up in some way. Other than that, it's a loose definition, not just forced meat encased in a natural casing such as intestines. Casings include hog intestines, sheep stomachs, even, says Allen, the air bladder of croakers.I knew sausage from what might be called the Wisconsin palate, which includes kielbasa (Polish) and bratwurst (German) and the American hot dog. Turns out that sausage has been made from pig's brain, carp, horsemeat, yak blood, squid, dog meat, goat, sheep lung, donkey meat, wild boar, and apparently any kind of meat, many kinds of internal organs and blood. Usually a sausage has 20-30% fat. There is sausage in very many world cuisines.My two favorite chapters were Chapter 4, "Sausage from Everywhere Else" and Chapter 5, "Technology and the Modern Sausage." Everywhere else means non-European, and they are everywhere! There's also a lot of cross-cuisine. Technology has made the modern sausage extremely variable, and its contents is often a way to market pieces and parts not easily sellable elsewise. The consumers of hot dogs might not want to know what goes into one.

By Rebecca A Diamond Gary Allen’s delightful new book, Sausage: A Global History, tells the fascinating back-story of sausages and how they evolved into the tasty, flavorful packages found in cuisines around the world. As Allen duly notes, “today sausages are equally at home in street vendors’ carts and in white-tablecloth dining establishments.”Long ago, our ancestors figured out that the intestines, stomachs, bladders and skins of animals could be useful containers for all the scraps of meat and organs that might otherwise be wasted. So, while it is true that sausage may have started out as “the efficient use of every part of a slaughtered beast,” Allen colorfully describes how they progressed to become “the darling of diners – daring and otherwise.”Although pork and beef are the ubiquitous varieties, lots of meats have been made into sausages, including lamb, goat, horsemeat, offal, poultry, seafood, and even elephant. Some cultures even have vegetable and grain sausages that predate the modern vegetarian craze.Allen covers in detail all the diverse and interesting ingredients that provide flavor and texture to these juicy parcels. He discusses some that might seem kind of unusual, including almonds, pistachios, walnuts, pine nuts, cinnamon and nutmeg, as well as more commonly recognized sausage flavorings such as sage, fennel, and garlic. Many of these combinations are a result of the meshing together of various cuisines as they conquered and/or developed trade routes with other regions. Local ingredients were integrated with those from exotic locales to create unique taste sensations.Sausage cooking and preserving methods are as varied as the ingredients, which results in a rainbow of hues for the finished product. A colorful lot, sausages range in color from the very pale German Weisswurst, which is white because it is unsmoked and contains no nitrites that would turn it pink, to very dark smoked and blood sausages.Blood is an ingredient that shows up in the earliest sausage references, reflecting the ‘no-waste’ attitudes of the past. Pigs blood is most commonly used – in addition to providing the sausage with a dark color, it also flavors the sausage. Although many might be squeamish about giving it a try, Allen notes that blood sausages are alive and well - part of a trend that is linked to the Slow Food movement, as well as a desire for folks to show respect for the animals we eat, and to explore the taste of history that would otherwise be lost – a way of reviving the kind of frugality that led to the invention of sausages.Chock-full of historical nuggets and informative references to the present day, this book is a mouthwatering look at this important food that has stood the test of time. Descriptive photos and illustrations are peppered throughout. For those hungering for a taste, Allen provides a selection of sausage recipes – the Orecchiette with Broccoli Rabe and Sausage is definitely on my list of those to try!

It's a *much* deeper dive into the history than any other charcuterie book I've read.The second chapter (the title still makes me snerk - "Some Historical Sausages and the Links Between Them") starts with a couple allusions from The Iliad and goes forward. There are sausage recipes from some of the easily accessible works (Scappi's Opera, Das Book von Guter Spise, Le Menagier de Paris) but also some of the more obscure European and Middle Eastern works.While it's a thin book, it's a useful one for anyone interested in more than the standard "here are today's recipes from around the world" charcuterie books.

From the very first page this author had me hooked. When a hotel room can't give Jan her reservation, she has no other option but room with her sexy best friend, Mick. I love the friends to lovers trope and Cara Connelly did a great job with it.

Oh how I love this series – it’s laden with fun, funny and heart By Gaele Oh how I love this series – it’s laden with fun, funny and heart and Cara Connelly didn’t fail to deliver in The Wedding Gift.A short (200-ish pages) novella installment that checks back in with a few of the characters introduced earlier in the journey as the friends to lovers romance between Jan and Mack develops. From the start, Connelly makes you want to know them better, and it isn’t long before you are cheering on their romance.Jan is really funny, clever and determined: the former shy and mousey girl is grabbing the monkey by the tail and stepping into a new life. A new life means a fresh start, so she intends to do all those things that always scared her before: reinventing herself in a way that will shock and awe her best friend Mick.Mick has always thought Jan was a terrific friend, and she wasn’t had on the eyes. But, he never really contemplated sharing his feelings for her, until the new Jan appears and the force of her personality and the changes she has made knock him for a loop. Gone is the reliable, quiet, shy and retiring Jan, and in her place is Jan to the nth power.The banter, the friendship and the true connection between these two is apparent from page one, and it just gets better as the book rolls on. Whipping through the pages to their final “aha” moment, just before Mick finally and utterly loses his mind.Connelly builds characters and relationships with care: funny, comical and even some dramatic reveals and moments are handled well, balanced and never overshadowing the romance. Entertaining Friends-To-Lovers Story By The Sassy Bookster The Wedding Gift is an entertaining, funny, sweet and sexy friends-to-lovers story and the newest addition to Cara Connelly’s Save the Date series.Jan Marone has watched all her friends get coupled up and is beginning to feel left out. The only problem is that the one guy she has always had the hots for is very much out of her league and is also her best friend, Mick McKenna. And so the New Jan Plan is born. The New Jan Plan involves updating her wardrobe and landing herself a hot guy during her trip to Key West for their friends’ wedding. The Plan does not go so well when she finds herself forced to share Mick’s room due to issues with her hotel reservation.Mick has been in love with Jan for a long time, but considers her too innocent for him (foolish dude) and so when she puts her plan into action, he finds himself torn between protecting her and giving her exactly what she wants. Watching Mick lose his mind was too funny and my favorite part was his internal monologues.I really enjoyed reading The Wedding Gift and my only complaint is that it was not long enough. I also like that there was very little drama, which got resolved very quickly. One thing I love about Ms. Connelly’s writing is her ability to make a romantic story very funny, sometimes almost comical, without losing its sexiness.I have had the pleasure of reading almost all of the books in the series and The Wedding Gift fits in very well with the other books. The entire series is one I intend to read over and over.*I received this book for free from the Publisher in exchange for an honest review.
