Very Educational By events3 This was my textbook for a STUDY OF LANDFORMS, a course I needed for my undergraduate Minor (Geography) several years ago. I was immediately impressed by the thorough coverage provided by Summerfield.The work starts with the basics: s-waves and p-waves and a brief introduction to seismology, a look at the apparent strata of the earth from the core to the atmosphere, and an introduction to endogenic (earth-originated) - e.g. mantle plumes and the "conveyor belt" effect leading to the movement of the lithosphere on the athenosphere - and exogenic (largely solar-related) processes - e.g., wind - which provide the energy for plate tectonics and the building up & erosion of land forms. Following this the work takes a more indepth look at topics such as various forms of uplift (orogenic and epierogenic processes such as block faulting, folding and igneous-related activity) followed by individual chapters on processes relating to coastlines, deserts, glacial, permafrost & etc.This is an excellent introduction to the earth sciences which treats the subject in a professional manner and largely eschews any indoctrination into or against ecological considerations.Highly recommended!

Very informative content and well explained concepts.I liked the way they "highlight" each key term in the text. So that I can easily spot what I need to know more abt when flipping through the dense text.

The instructions for each snack can be followed even by people without much experience in the kitchen. I must admit that I am one of those people. Most of the time I manage to ruin recipes. However, this hasn’t happened this time thanks to this useful cookbook.

She offers an eye-opening perspective of a young man recruited to become a suicide bomber; a vivacious girl determined to play the male-dominated sport of cricket; and a revolutionary musician who performs to spite the Taliban. Every viewpoint this book puts forth is fresh, different, and worth knowing.Saadia's most compelling writing technique is her knack for tension. She has this way of slipping in little hints - a detail that you might overlook or think nothing of - then wrapping everything back full circle. There were times I gasped, "No!" as I realized the foreshadowing from three pages ago had come back, and something terrible was about to happen. She pulls you in consciously and meticulously - with every detail, she gets you to love or sympathize with her characters and feel invested in their futures, fragile as they are.If I have one wish for this book, it's that I want it to show more than explain, especially when it comes to the deep emotions each protagonist experiences. Saadia sets up each story with so much excellent tension, and I want to see the characters react instead of being told how they feel - then again, I'm an analytical reader and prefer to read between the lines, which isn't the case for everyone. Style preferences aside, there is much depth here to dissect.As an American reader, I was grateful for the opportunity to explore these perspectives and learn more about a place that US news typically doesn't empathize with. Yet it's critical to acknowledge how many of our problems, hopes, dreams, loves, and passions parallel each other. That is the importance of world literature and this book: to let us hear these voices and feel their existence, no matter what physical distance separates us. Beyond the political critiques, Saadia hits on something even more important and memorable, at least for me: the shared beauty and common kindness of humanity.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Optimism and Hope By K. Glaes The stories in this book filled me with so many emotions, but I mainly came away with optimism and hope. The characters and their situations, in many ways, are universal. That they are Pakistanis dealing with a world turned upside-down by religious extremism, political corruption, war, poverty or violence makes me think twice about my preconceptions. Most of the stories were gut-wrenching or heartbreaking from my Western perspective, but they all expanded my Weltanschauung in some way. Each story is completely different, but each illustrates a facet of Pakistani life and the good and bad of the people who live there. Each story ends in hope, whether for a better life, a better understanding, a new start--the characters find a new path. The writing is wonderful and evocative of life in that part of the world. I know I will be re-reading these stories over time, even though they are unforgettable.

I love how Saadia Faruqi portrayed so many diverse characters, yet how they all hailed from Pakistan. If you've been to Pakistan, you know how many different social circles, classes, and people they are. Her writing is honest and thought-provoking. Emotional and touching. (I especially loved Nida's story and Farzana's and Lubna's story) A must-read for anyone! Gives a good insight into the subtleties and resilience of Pakistani society. Great read!

By Nigel Holt I am always a fan of reading books regarding diet because it not only helps me to reduce weight but also I can learn healthy recipes. The author explained what Ketogenic diet is and I must admit that it’s the first time I read something like this. One of the best things that was attractive about this diet book is that there are wide range of recipes in there which made my diet plan more tasty. This diet is very easy and enjoyable.

By Jules Carl First I must say this: If you haven't read the first 3 books in this series, do it, It'll get you caught up on the story line and you will enjoy them so much, you'll have to read the next ones. This book continues the saga of a post apocalypse world (not zombie or pandemic event) that is so believable that it very well could or may happen to our great nation. Sorry don't mean to scare anyone, but it is so well written by a man who clearly has knowledge plus actual survival skills and has done his research. This book continues with all the characters I already like and feel the fear, pain & joy they do. New characters that are interwoven into the story making the whole experience seem even more real. As the storyline grows, so does the suspense and fear of what could be. Once again, WELL DONE Boyd! I love your writing and if this world of ours ever goes to S***, I'll be finding you & yours simply because there is strength in numbers AND decent, smart and skilled people are hard to find even in the here and now!!!

In this series there are coping and managing life in the 'new' world, but I was distracted by the poor planning and utilization of resources available to the survivors. I do not know if this was intentional, but some of the stuff would actually be detrimental in this particular set of circumstances. It was only a mild distraction, though.
