Italy is experiencing a surge of gastronomic nostalgia, a yearning to recreate and relive the delectable rustic meals of yesteryear, of brimming chalices of wine and sauce-laden pasta. A return to the simple abundance of Italy’s past!

Ah, if only it were true. If there was a glorious yesteryear of Italian feasting, it was enjoyed only by society’s elite. As for standard, rustic fare, such meals bore little resemblance to what is now considered—even in Italy—traditional Italian food.

Determined to uncover the true roots of Italian cuisine and reveal its intriguing yet uncelebrated past, food historian Karima Moyer-Nocchi interviewed Italian "ninetysomething" women from various walks of life, from charcoal-makers to countesses. Her travels spanned from the far north to the deep south, as well as Italy's former landholdings. All of the interviewees had lived through the harrowing years called the Ventennio fascista, the twenty-year reign of fascism in Italy, and were eager to have their final say.

What follows are eighteen remarkable oral narratives, each building upon the last to create a mosaic of Italian foodways, from the fascist era through to the post World War II boom, the “Dolce Vita.” Each woman contributes a recipe chosen specifically to reflect what food was like when she was growing up under Mussolini. The narratives are separated by astringent, yet entertaining essay briefs, illuminating various aspects of gastronomic history and daily life in fascist Italy.

Engrossingly entertaining, Chewing the Fat gently debunks the myths of Italy’s gastronomic nostalgia industry, revealing a culture of food that is surprisingly different from the image most people have of Italian cuisine.

"A remarkable insight into the realities of Italian food. This book lays bare the multiple dimensions of Italian gastronomy: geography, politics, social background, education and economics. It is an eloquent dissection of the nuances of the world’s favorite cooking as well as a magical exercise in memory. A brilliant reconstruction of the kitchens and cookery (and much else besides) of a previous generation."

-Tom Jaine, Food writer, publisher, critic, and restaurateur

Chewing the Fat: An Oral History of Italian Foodways from Fascism to Dolce Vita, by Karima Moyer-Nocchi

Review Chewing the Fat is a step away from the Italian food history we think we know. Moyer-Nocchi artfully combines historical research with oral history to peel away the heroic myths and show the everyday work (and workers) of Italy’s gastronomic past. - Zachary Nowak, Assoc. Director for the Food and Sustainability Studies Program, The Umbra Institute, Perugia

Review This enchanting collection of interviews with very old women, talking at the end of their lives about memories of life and food during the fascist regime, is an evocative yet rigorous examination of traditional Italian gastronomy. Chewing the Fat places these interviews in the context of serious food history and offers a realistic appraisal of what is going on in kitchens and supermarkets today. Gently debunking some of the picturesque and much loved myths about Italian food, the author gives us fresh and realistic insights into the realities and delights of Italian cuisine. Her translation of the interviews is done with affection, tolerance, and generosity of spirit, balanced by informative, astringent commentary and essays, making this far more than a collection of reminiscences. This is a book for all lovers of Italy and its food.” -Gillian Riley, author of The Oxford Companion to Italian Food

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An insider look By Terciani I have to start by saying that one of the woman featured in this book is my great-aunt. I met the author when she came to do her interview. There were many of us in the family who had come to hear my aunt talk about her life during the fascist era. We too were curious to hear her story. The author told us that this often happened when she went to do an interview, that the family members finally managed to take the time to listen to this family elder talk about her experiences. What I wanted to point out in particular in this review is how skillfully the author rendered the interview into the English narration. She really captured the personality of my aunt and I can hear her clearly through the translation. I think the work that Moyer-Nocchi is doing is so very important because we don’t take the time to listen to our elders, and the valuable insight they bring will be lost if no one bothers to go to the time and effort of valorizing and recording their experiences. It is not just about ignoring old people because we are too busy, we ignore that period of time in our past. We just don’t want to know, particularly about people like my aunt, who unfortunately was not contrary to the regime. But her perspective too is part of the collective, and she adds her viewpoint to the overall picture. If you want to get a slice of life picture of Italy’s past that you are not going to get anywhere else or in any other way, this is the book for you.

The author has a great writing style and a brand new idea for understanding not only the Italian farm family's plight under Il Duce, but the migration of the poverty-stricken rural majority to the cities in search of better living conditions.I really enjoyed reading the interviews with these venerable, strong women. I was amazed at their ability to survive as the last in each family to get any kind of nutrition. Not only were they strong, but they also showed great intelligence and perseverance in finding jobs in the face of depressed employment opportunities and indifference to the needs of females in general. Each interview includes a favorite recipe truly indicative of the inventiveness of these women despite the desperate lack of resources. Most of them pooh-poohed the idea that these were actual recipes. Many of them were adamant that they just "cooked". The author includes an intermezzo after each interview expanding on what the interviewee said with facts about the time period and the laws and societal rules in that region at that time.Read this book. You will enjoy it!

A must-read By jennifer Carlisle "This book grabbed my attention in unexpected ways; I found I could not put it down.'Chewing the Fat' is a window on the real world of Italian cuisine--a first hand account of living, eating and surviving in Italy during the fascist Mussolini years, from the mouths of twenty women who lived through them. And it is this which so fascinates in Karima Moyer-Nocchi's admirable work. She has captured the moment via her thoughtful interviews of these survivors, many of whom are now in their nineties, which sets the story straight on this era of gastronomic Italian cultural history, and the mythology around "Italian Cuisine". Moyer-Nocchi realistically illustrates how Italian food during the fascist period was part and parcel of its context, and how that reality sheds light on more than one cultural myth surrounding the origins of Italian food as we know and love it. In her wide-reaching research, Moyer-Nocchi sat face to face 'chewing the fat' with these women, talking and cooking with them from their own recipes, and deliciously serves-up foods and stories of the the town and the country dweller; the privileged and the poor alike. Their stories are their veritable swan songs, captured with heart, and an alert ear to their class and region. Moyer-Nocchi, American-born and living in Italy for the past two decades, translates their accents and dialects with respect to each woman's voice. Her translations resonate with a reverence and rich authenticity, recreating for English readers the flavor of these women's timeless characters. Thoroughly enjoyable, a great read, and a nourishing must-read for anyone interested in food and Italian Culture".

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good Reading By LAS Reviewer Science fiction has a creepy side. You can read about it here. The titles of these tales give away major spoilers about what happens in them. Ms. Parrish used this same creative technique in her previous anthology, A Is For Apocalypse. Once again I will be referring to the author’s name in this review instead of the titles of their contributions so that other readers will remain just as surprised as I was by what happens in them.Ms. Cleto caught my attention immediately. It was fun to figure out what a Snow Queen with a rare, magical gift could possibly have in common with an ordinary teenage girl like Gwyn. I enjoyed jumping back and forth between their timelines as I attempted to piece all of the clues together. The ending worked particularly well for the short story form due to how quickly the plots were sketched out. This doesn’t happen very often when I read anthologies, but I enjoyed every single selection in this book. Some of them would have worked much better as novellas or full-length novels, though, due to their complicated plots. Ms. Simon and Mr. Fosbury’s piece of fiction was a good example of this. It showed what happened to a village midwife named Hessura after she made a difficult choice for one of the pregnant women she had helped. The premise was fascinating, but the plot simply didn’t have quite enough time to fully develop. As soon as I started reading Mr. Phillips’ entry, I couldn’t wait to discover out what happened next. He described a little girl named Adina who born with an unusual birth defect. Her mother soon figured out how to turn this anomaly into a steady source of income for the family. The character development was incredible, especially considering how quickly the author needed to work in order to pull everything together. I never wanted to stop listening to what Adina had to say.I’d recommend B Is For Broken to anyone who loves contemporary science fiction as much as I do. There is a lot of great material to explore in this collection!originally posted at long and short reviews

By Tabitha Lord B is for Broken is the second installment in Rhonda Parrish's alphabet collection. While the theme of the stories is broader in scope than the first book (A is for Apocalypse), they all have a haunting and darkly delicious quality. A satisfying read...

John Peterson claims that the only justification for the surprise ending is that life itself is full of surprises. Our lives are full of strange accidents. He rightly invokes G.K. Chesterton who says, "With every step of our lives, we enter into the middle of some story we are certain to misunderstand." Those who are convinced that everything is explained by sociological pressures or psychological urges or biological functions or economic processes may also prefer their fiction to represent life’s outcomes as inevitable and therefore predictable. "To the fatalist," says Chesterton, "existence is a science or a plan which must end up in a certain way. But existence is a story, and a story may end up in any way." Stories in Best Laid Plans were originally published in Gilbert: the Magazine of the American Chesterton Society. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ “John Peterson is twisted in the best sense of the word. He twists and turns with the convoluted contortions of Chestertonian paradox, surprising us with the joy of being surprised!” —JOSEPH PEARCE, award-winning author and editor of StAR Magazine and Sapientia Press “Best Laid Plans is a wry look at the train wreck of modern life, where irony and misfortune dog the good and bad alike, and the quality of mercy is not strained—it pours.” —THERESE WARMUS, Literary Editor, Gilbert Magazine From the Foreword: “There runs through these stories like a deep undertow the sense that the world in which they take place—a world that is recognizably our world—is both 'fallen' and lost in confusion. Yet this is balanced by the sense—also implicit but unmistakably there—that every time an ordinary human being choses good over evil, the world is to some small extent made right.” —G.J. MEYER, award-winning author of "A World Undone: The Story of the Great War 1914-1918" ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ JOHN PETERSON is the author of "The Return of Father Brown" and "G.K. Chesterton on Detective Fiction." He is the founding publisher of Gilbert, the magazine of the American Chesterton Society, and has edited three books on detective fiction. He lives in Barrington, Illinois.

Brunk John Peterson delivers one surprise ending after another in this collection of mini-mysteries. "Mysteries" in this case doesn't always mean murders or even necessarily crimes. Rather, each story is a tantalizing riddle, whether it is a brush with the supernatural or the all-too-natural. Of course, Peterson delivers a satisfying number of freshly-shot corpses as well.As with any good mystery, you'll find yourself trying to guess the endings. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Witty, Original, Enjoyable By James G. Bruen Jr. I didn't rush through this collection. Instead, I read these witty, original and very short stories one or two at a time to savor them.Peterson's got the knack for the unexpected twist or turn, and he exhibits it frequently. The stories are well constructed and often charming; some just entertain, while others demonstrate real insight into the human condition. The stories cross genres: crime, mystery, mild horror, the supernatural, etc., but they never disappoint. Peterson's a master story teller and this collection's a treat.

Pam Durban's new collection of stories explores the myriad ways people lose, find, and hold on to one another. When all else fails her characters--science, religion, family, self--the powerful act of storytelling itself keeps their broken lives together and fosters hope. Each story in this rewarding and multifaceted collection introduces people who yearn for better lives and find themselves entangled in the hopes and dreams that heal and bind us all. The title story in Soon--chosen by John Updike for The Best American Short Stories of the Century anthology--follows two generations of a family whose lives are driven by the "patient and brutal need that people called hope, which . . . formed from your present life a future where you would be healed or loved." In "The Jap Room," winner of the 2008 Goodheart Prize, a woman tries to help her husband, a World War II veteran, finally come home. "Rowing to Darien" introduces a famous English actress as she rows away from her husband's rice plantation. In "Hush" a gravely ill man encounters himself in the darkness of Kentucky's iconic Mammoth Cave. An adopted child waits for his mother to come back for him in "Birth Mother," and, in "Forward, Elsewhere, Out," a mother must come to terms with her adolescent son's sexuality. The stories in this collection deftly broach universal themes of love, loss, and the redemptive power of storytelling. Durban's writing has been praised for its depth and mastery of characterization, its ability to persuade readers that the lives of the people in her stories are true, that their troubles and pleasures are real enough to matter. The nuanced and artfully rendered cast in this collection wrestles with the big questions that face us all--Why are we here? How are we to live? What matters most? The thirteen stories in Soon have appeared in earlier forms in Atlanta Magazine, Indiana Review, Georgia Review, Carolina Quarterly, Idaho Review, Southern Review, Kenyon Review, Shenandoah, Five Points, High Five: An Anthology of Fiction from 10 Years of Five Points, New Stories from the South: The Year's Best, Best American Short Stories, and Best American Short Stories of the Century. The collection includes a foreword from novelist and short story writer Mary Hood, winner of the Flannery O'Connor Prize, Townsend Prize, and Lillian Smith Award.

Soon: Stories (Story River Books), by Pam Durban

Review "The stories in this collection deftly broach the universal themes of love, loss, and the redemptive power of storytelling."--Dew on the Kudzu"I recommend Pam Durban's wise and gorgeously-crafted second collection of stories, 'Soon.' In each story, someone or something is clinging to something, which in most cases reduces the richness of present life.... These stories are ripe for soul-bearing discussion."--Dannye Romine Powell, Charlotte Observer"The stories in Soon all share an awareness of the fragility of life and the intricate web of past loves and memories held within. On surface the large situations are simple: death, divorce, a child's rebellion, and yet, the weaving process of all that has fed these lives is complex and beautifully represents the particles of everyday life. In elegant prose, Durban explores these moments of transition and loss with great wisdom and compassion."--Jill McCorkle"Pam Durban's Soon will add great substance to the growing awareness of her being one of America's finest writers. In this new book of short stories, her talent is on full display and I was reminded of Lorrie Moore, Ann Patchett, and Ron Rash. I would call Durban first-rate but I believe that she is far, far better than that."--Pat Conroy"Pam Durban writes with such deep and abiding empathy that we never doubt her characters' voices, thoughts, or hearts, whether in the pre-Civil War South or more contemporary settings. Yet what makes these stories equally unforgettable is the beauty of her language. To have this wonderful new collection Soon in print is cause for celebration."--Ron Rash

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Brilliant stories from a fantastic author! By womenswrites I have read some truly amazing books this year and this book just soared away over the top of them all. From the first page, I was captivated by the writing style, the combination of forthrightness and an eerie sense of placidity, like a sailboat's wake on a mirror-like sea. And then came the characters, so unusual and yet so recognizable, with stories so common and yet so riveting in the capable hands of this brilliant author. I can't believe Durban is not a household name or at least a huge bestseller. She should be. This book is a treasure.

She is such a good writer that you can't see her craft By claire ford fullerton I was in complete awe of Pam Durban's command of language as I read this collection of short stories. They are so much more than short stories; they are vignettes of life written with bold plausibility, and each story is written through the scrim of glaring insight and discretely delivered compassion. We not only come to know her characters, we understand how they came to find themselves in their predicaments, and I can honestly say I reveled in each one. To read "Soon" is to receive high education in the art of short story writing. Because it seems contradictory to say Ms. Durban is both lyrical and economic of word, I'll say instead that she is summarily a seamless spell-weaver. She is such a good writer that you can't see her craft. I'll be re-reading "Soon" and proudly displaying it in my library. It is a treasure, and I'll be recommending it to my friends.
