James Beard Award Finalist, 2016"Terrific" -Wine Spectator "Engaging" -New York Times "Hard to resist" -Boston Globe The underdog story of how the United States came to dominate fine wine From the author of The Audacity of Hops: The History of America's Craft Beer Revolution comes the triumphant tale of how America belted France from atop its centuries-old pedestal as the world's top wine-producing and -drinking nation. Until the mid-1970s, American fine wine was an international also-ran. Then a series of events and a group of individuals changed everything forever. This is that story. All the big players and milestones are here, from the Judgment of Paris and the French Paradox to Julia Child and Robert Parker. Told in a fast-moving, engaging style free of wine jargon, it is the first of its kind: a book focused solely on the rise of fine wine in the United States since the early 1960s, in California and elsewhere, and how that rise altered the way the world drinks--for better or worse.

American Wine: A Coming-of-Age Story, by Tom Acitelli

Review "A vignette-driven book might have become a collection of anecdotes. While it would be hard to resist any narrative that includes a cast as diverse as Julia Child, Robert Mondavi, Cesar Chavez, and social media wine guru Gary Vaynerchuk, Acitelli is adept at connecting the dots. He revisits key events and underscores their implications." -The Boston Globe"[A]n engaging, anecdotal look at some of the characters and events that have led the United States to become the biggest consumer of wine in the world." - Eric Asimov in The New York Times“A tasty combination of commercial and culinary history reflecting the maturations of the wine business and Americans' taste buds.” —Kirkus Reviews"Tom Acitelli has written a first-of-its-kind, joyously readable, almost novelistic history of the rise of American wine." —Edible Boston"With Acitelli's expert storytelling, we understand how America came to dominate the industry." —The Wine Buzz“American Wine is a glittering panorama of the colorful, visionary people who made appreciation of fine wine an everyday pleasure in America. It is thorough, accurate, and comprehensive but written with dramatic flair.” —Larry Stone, owner, Lingua Franca Wines, and wine director, Huneeus Vintners“It wasn’t until the 1970s that our wine industry quit making ‘domestic’ wine and began making ‘American’ wine. In that decade a generation of talented young winemakers proved themselves to be world class. . . . It was a thrilling time to be a wine lover. Tom Acitelli’s new book captures American wine at the crossroads in stop-action wordography perfectly.” —Craig “Meathead” Goldwyn, former wine critic, Chicago Tribune, and founder, International Wine Review“Tom Acitelli tells with both color and accuracy the wonderful story of American wine after World War II and how it became a giant among world wines. His focus on the sometimes crazy people behind it all makes the book a delight to read. . . . American Wine brings them alive in an easy style that is as refreshing as a Napa sparkling wine.” —George M. Taber, author of Judgment of Paris and To Cork or Not to Cork“As both a wine and history buff, I enjoyed American Wine immensely. In my lifetime I’ve witnessed huge advances both in the quality and perception of domestic wines, and Tom’s book puts it all in context in an entertaining and informative manner.” —Philip Greene, author of To Have and Have Another“Told through a series of dramatic narrative snapshots, Acitelli’s book offers a vivid history of American wine’s twisty road to enological success. Truly a page-turner for oenophiles as well as for those who just enjoy tales that combine the right mix of complexity, acidity, and fruit-driven fun.” —Ian Mount, author of The Vineyard at the End of the World“I happily recommend [American Wine] to novice and expert alike. Great story-teller (Acitelli) meets great story (wine in America)—it’s a perfect pairing.” —The Wine Economist"Acitelli’s latest dryly witty book delivers both the juicy gossip as well as the insightful analysis readers need in order to understand exactly how America went from a wine zero to a wine hero. —Library Journal

Informative with detailed turn of events from its beginning to what the wine industry has become in America. What amazed me to no end the people involved in America's wine history, their last name well renowned and still exist. You will read about Napa Valley boosters, wine pioneers, winemakers, Connoisseurs, successors to principal founders, innovations, etc. American and non-American to premium and super premium brands, fruit fanatic, now that is funny. So much information concerning 'wine' so much to absorb. I will not pretend to know a whole lot about that velvety liquid but I can tell you I was educated to know something about it. Thank you, Darlene CruzI received a free book that I had won via Goodreads First Read Giveaway.

I always felt like the author was trying to include too much information without much success . The book feels disjointed, boring at times and forgettable. Would not recommend . Time not well spent .

Author makes too many factual errors showing that his research was somewhat limited. Examples: He refers to Almaden as a Napa winery, it was not. He disparages Carignan as a poor quality grape, when it's actually pretty good when not grown in the San Joaquin Valley and irrigated to enormous yields. Grenache has the same issues. Many other small errors cause this to be less than it should be. This could be the penultimate history on the subject, if rigorously edited and reissued as a revised edition.

In six compelling essays, Wes Jackson lays the foundation for a new farming economy grounded in nature's principles and located in dying small towns and rural communities. Exploding the tenets of industrial agriculture, Jackson seeks to integrate food production with nature in a way that sustains both. His writing is anchored in his work with The Land Institute, lending authenticity to topics that—in the hands of other writers—too often fail to escape the realm of the conceptual.

Becoming Native to This Place, by Wes Jackson

Amazon.com Review Ideas seem to advance in waves upon the modern mind, and one of the concepts cresting at present is the notion of place. This recent swell could be charted back to Daniel Kemmis's 1992 book Community and the Politics of Place as well as his more recent meditation on the inhabitation of cities (The Good City and the Good Life). Wendell Berry's A Place on Earth continued the theme, as has Alan Thein Durning's recent book This Place on Earth. Wes Jackson, a bioligist by training, applies the notion of place to a rethinking of ecological and agricultural policy. His hope is that the concept of place will seep deeply into our thoughts and affect the very way we inhabit the world. In effect, Jackson argues for inverting the slogan "think globally, act locally": when we think of the whole Earth on a local level as a group of loved places rather than territory or resource pools, then we will be headed in the right direction.

From Publishers Weekly Environmentalist and former MacArthur fellow Jackson argues for a shift to economic and lifestyle paradigms based on ecology. Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review

"A small book rich in ideas. Not all its concepts are new; scientists have been talking about some of them for years. What is new, and important, is the way that Mr. Jackson presents his views to the nonscientific public." -- New York Times

BECOMING NATIVE TO THE PLACE, really brings out the problems that we face in todays grab it, use it, throw it away, and move on society. Nothing of nature is sacred. Nothing of our rural world is attractive to the urbanites of today. I'm afraid Mr. Jackson's desire for a people who want to settle down and live a simple life in natural surroundings, is a hopeless wish for our current self-destroying society.

Alternative perspective on human interaction with the earth By Gregory J Guenther Very easy reading, short book.Wes Jackson describes a growing perspective that we need to interact symbiotically with the earth rather than considering the earth a "resource" at our disposal. He mixes philosophy with actual personal experiences to further illustrate the story. The fact that he began the Land Use Institute in Kansas and is still and active participant lends credibility to his dialog.

12 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Doesn't live up to the title. By Settler Wes Jackson is writing with the huge disadvantage of a great title, and I have to say I value all the thought and meditation the title provokes more than the content of the book, which starts with some promise but then wanders off into the woods. He tells you early on that he's going to get lost in the woods when he says that we need to have our "evolutionary/ecological worldview inform our decisions."Part of the problem is that the title is hopeful, but the book reads like more of a wandering lament or critique of our situation for which the author ultimately has no compelling answers. That said, the first chapters do provide some useful information on the history of agriculture in the US and the Soviet Union. Particularly interesting is his view that the failure of Soviet agriculture (because much of it was based upon Communist ideology, including ideas about plant heredity) produced in the West the contrary view that philosophy should have no bearing whatsoever on agriculture. Jackson does want philosophy and moral reflection to influence our thinking about agriculture, but he still leaves us ungrounded in any worldview that can provide moral compulsion for care of the earth.Skip this book in favor of any of the following:Living at Nature's Pace, Farming and the American Dream, by Gene LogsdonThe Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture, by Wendell BerryThe Omnivore's Dilemma, A Natural History of Four Meals, by Michael Pollan

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Brilliant Stories of the Gatsby Era By The Garden Interior She is of course justly famous as a novelist, but she had two other extremely influential careers, both as one of the foremost interior decorators of her time and as a brilliant garden-maker. Her novels are still extremely popular but her short stories are also superb. This comprehensive collection is not for shallow dipping or a quick read, she is far too dense a stylist and her characters and situation are far too complex not to give her your entire attention. But she repays the effort handsomely. What a delight this book is to have around this summer, furnishing an escape into the vanished world of wealth and position in the first three decades of the last century, brilliantly observed and fascinatingly told, these stories shine like polished gemstones.

A desperate night club executive running for his life down the busy streets of Taiwan. Two frustrated short-order cooks taking a gamble at the good life by robbing a grave on a wind-swept October night. A young girl racking her brain to find a successful way to get a frightened cat out of a tree. A couple attending a command performance before a hostile regent who holds the power of death in her hands. A middle-aged woman and her teenage nephew, suddenly forced to face the truths of life together. What do all these disparate characters have in common? They are all facing the aftermath of The Fall, that fearsome event in human history wherein mankind lost its innocence, and one selfish decision held universal ramifications. Through this collection of short stories, author Jeffrey S. Wooff shows us snapshots of our personal Falls and inadvertent Stumbles and asks us to consider whether falling may be a necessity instead of a failing. Maybe, just maybe.... We cannot fall at all. Maybe The Fall itself never really happened.

By Michael Braggard The story is awesome and the only feeling I have from the start to the end is excitement. Matthew is Diane's boss and her lover at the same time. The story is so good but I think the continuation is great. I am looking forward to have the next series, for I know the secret is there. I am thinking what is really happening with James, Diane's close friend. And what will be going on the character of Tanya the new boss in her office. This is so romantic and the characters are so in love with each other. Dianne felt jealous every time she saw Tanya and Matthew with each other. I really love the story very much.

The idea of keeping an affair with the boss is an appealing fantasy. This is basically why I grabbed this book. I find the tension between Matthew and Diane very sexy and hot. Plus the story is also coupled with some other twists that you must know. The hot romance has been portrayed in a wonderful way. I kept me interested throughout. Reading this has been fun!

Leonard Bilsiter was one of those people who have failed to find this world attractive or interesting, and who have sought compensation in an “unseen world” of their own experience or imagination—or invention. Children do that sort of thing successfully, but children are content to convince themselves, and do not vulgarise their beliefs by trying to convince other people. Leonard Bilsiter’s beliefs were for “the few,” that is to say, anyone who would listen to him.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Saki at his best By Robert Guttman Beasts and Super-Beasts comprises thirty-seven short stories from the pen of the incomparable Saki, which was the pen-name for H. H. Munro. Saki's ironic and witty stories chronicled the British upper class during the Edwardian period, the era that represented the zenith of British power and complacency just before the cataclysm of World War I. The quality of his wit and satiric humor are of the very highest order, comparable to very best of Oscar Wilde and Ambrose Bierce. As with Bierce, a touch of cruelty was often present in Saki's humor. In addition, Saki also shared with Bierce a taste for the supernatural, a quality which comes across in many of the stories in this particular collection.Reading Saki is an absolute must for any aspiring writer, and an absolute pleasure for readers everywhere.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Some of Saki's best stories By Marisa I'm a big fan of Saki's incredibly dry wit and hilariously snarky upper-class idiots - the characters he describes may be firmly set in their particular British early-20th-century setting, but many of them are universal types who can be found in practically any time and place. This collection has some of my favorites (especially the second story "Laura" and "The Schartz-Metterklume Method").The lack of a table of contents is annoying but not terrible, and for a free copy of the text it's readable and enjoyable.

I do like the short story format, and Saki is one of its masters. I like O. Henry, Ambrose Bierce, Oscar Wilde, Poe and Shirley Jackson. Got this one free for the Kindle, so I can browse and consume at my leisure.

Most of the authors I am familiar with, only one newcomer in the group. All of the stories are novella so it is difficult for the authors to write extremely complex stories.Erin’s Kiss by Lora Leigh is typical of most of her books. This one is tied to Cooper's Fall, it is military not Breed related. Fans of hers will enjoy this novella immensely concerning agent Turk and the Erin, the step-daughter of the man who Turk works for. More sex than story, I would have preferred a stronger storyline.mistaken is by Laurelin McGee. This is a new author to me. This story is the most fun. It really has a good unique storyline for the anthology. Noah and Jaylene are have great chemistry. The way Jaylene goes about solving Noah’s “secret” I found humorous, plus the secret itself is a hoot!Burn for Me by Shiloh Walker is the first novella in a trilogy that deals with Tate’s mother disappearing when he was a kid. It has character development and a connecting storyline to Break for Me and Burn for Me. It also has the emotional intensity that Ms. Walker writes so superbly. Ali and Tate sizzle together, even when Tate is struggling with his past that is full of unanswered questions and misconceptions.Tangled by Kate Douglas is one of my favorites in this anthology. It is a happily ever after story with love found quickly by Cassie and Nate. Suspenseful but lighthearted vineyard tale too so it is the perfect finish to this anthology. It is also the tamest of the four, more along the lines of the Lethal Series (another favorite) than the Wolf Tales series. All four together 4 stars.Copy provided by the publisher through Net Galley for an honest review.

Being that these are four short stories I will piggy back off of the write up of each for this review, with my first thoughts after reading each.Erin’s Kiss by Lora LeighI’m little perplexed. Is this part of an ongoing series? I felt completely out of the loop and because of that I became disinterested in these two. (3 STARS)misTaken by Laurelin McGeeOkay, don’t dis romance novels with a snarky attitude and then expect the reader to then enjoy yours. Total turn off. It made me extremely dislike this character. There’s nothing Alpha about the guy either.(1 STAR)Burn for Me by Shiloh WalkerI am a Shiloh Walker fan, but damn it all. You screw this single mom for three years and then won’t commit because your parents would fight when you were a kid? Grow a pair and be a better man. Alpha my ass. (2 STARS)Tangled by Kate DouglasThe saving grace of this book was the final story. Fun, sweet and sexy. I wish there was more, or that it was a full length book. (4 STARS)*ARC provided by Netgalley

By Red25 Lora Leigh's name was the first thing I saw on the cover of Hot Alphas and I immediately wanted to read it! Then when I saw all of the author names, well, let's just say I did not waste any time requesting to read it! I'm so glad I did because this was an amazing anthology and I loved it!I'm going to give a little review of each book listed the way they appeared in the book.Erin's Kiss by Lora Leigh was a great introduction into this anthology! It was had action, danger, secrets, and heat. I loved Erin and Turk, they were both strong characters and I enjoyed how they challenged each other. I'm happy they got their HEA and I'm really excited to read whatever comes of the little cliffhanger that Lora Leigh left us with!As soon as I started reading misTaken by Laurelin McGee, I absolutely loved it!! It is a funny, sexy, light read and it is definitely one of my favorite stories in Hot Alphas! I enjoyed every minute of it and I cannot tell how much I'm looking forward to reading Miss Match!Burn For Me by Shiloh Walker is the best and my favorite story in this anthology! It grabbed my attention and refused to let go. It's heartbreaking, beautiful, steamy, and has some mystery to it. It was amazing and I completely loved it!Tangled by Kate Douglas ended Hot Alphas just right. It will tug on your heart a little, but will leave you with a big smile on your face. It has danger, mystery, passion, and sweetness. I really enjoyed reading it!All four stories end in HEAs, they're told from both the H/h's POVs, although we do occasionally hear from another character in a couple of the books. Hot Alphas is really a wonderful anthology and you are not going to want to miss out on these fantastic tales! ~4.5 Stars Overall******** I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. ********

She took a drastic turn in perspective and (to me) it made her seem cheaper somehow. There was more dialogue and less back story or supporting story in this one. Novak also seems to be changing a lot, and for a man we hardly know anything about... again I feel as if it cheapens the characters somewhat. I enjoyed the storyline but felt the characters could use a bit more developing.I don't think I'll be reading the 3rd book in the series.

By Amazon Customer Genevieve's virginal convictions are beginning to be swayed by experiencing a billionaire's lifestyle...and traveling with her devastatingly handsome boss causes her no end of confusion. Should she? Shouldn't she? Will she? Won't she? And he's not himself, either!

Crabs and oysters take center stage as Chef Bill Smith conveys his passion for preparing these sumptuous shellfish long associated with southern coastlines. Smith's sensibilities as a North Carolinian born and raised down east are vibrantly on display as he recalls the joy of growing up catching crabs and shucking oysters. Smith traveled the coastline, visited with crab fishermen and oyster farmers, and dove deep into a library's worth of regional cookbooks and collections of heirloom recipes from seaside communities, notably in North Carolina and Louisiana. His collection of fifty recipes, organized by courses, ranges from simple, everyday preparations to elaborate ones suitable for fancy parties. From Crabmeat Cobbler, Roasted Oysters, and Hard-Crab Stew with White Cornmeal Dumplings, to Crabmeat Ravigotte and Oyster Shortcake, cooks will find a succulent recipe for every occasion. The book includes seasonal selection information and detailed cleaning and preparation instructions for hard- and soft-shell crabs and oysters.

Best Ebook Online The New Valley: Novellas, by Josh Weil

The three linked novellas that comprise Josh Weil's masterful debut bring us into America's remote and often unforgiving backcountry, and delicately open up the private worlds of three very different men as they confront love, loss, and their own personal demons.

Set in the hardscrabble hill country between the Virginias, The New Valley is populated by characters striving to forge new lives in the absence of those they have loved. Told in three varied and distinct voices - from a soft-spoken middle-aged beef farmer struggling to hold himself together after his dad's death; to a health-obsessed single father desperate to control his reckless, overweight daughter; to a mildly retarded man who falls in love with a married woman intent on using him in a scheme that will wound them both - each novella is a vivid, stand-alone examination of Weil's uniquely romanticized relationships. As the men battle against grief and solitude, their heartache leads them all to commit acts that will bring both ruin and salvation.

Written with a deeply American tone, focused attention to story, and veneration for character, The New Valley is a tender exploration of survival, isolation, and the deep, consuming ache for human connection.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. In Depth Character Studies...But Didn't Keep Me Engrossed By Howard P. Grill The author certainly gets to the core of his characters and is able to let us see the world through their eyes and experience their emotions. In fact, one emerges 'feeling their world' as it were, which is a world that is certainly quite different from my own. However, while the stories are satisfying and emotional, particularly the one about Stillman, I found them rather slow moving. This is particularly true of the last one, during which my interest was lost long before the ending. Definitely less grabbing than the other two. Nonetheless, I found myself wanting more than just seeing and feeling through the characters eyes. In short, I felt like there simply wasn't enough happening to really keep me wanting to continue through the stories.I know this one got wonderful reviews from The NYT Book Review etc, and while I thought it was good, I just didn't find it to be THAT good. A solid three stars, at least that was what it did for me.

11 of 13 people found the following review helpful. A BRILLIANT NEW TALENT By R. Goolrick I was lucky enough to read an advance copy of Josh Weil's first book, and it is extraordinary. He is the real deal; a great writer with something to say about the intricate sadness and bravery and hopefulness of the human heart. Set in the hardscrabble country of Southwest Virginia, each of these three novellas is a gem, each different, each moving and involving and stunning in the simplicity and beauty of the language. Josh Weil is The Next Great Thing in American fiction. Don't miss it.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An evocative and moving book By Jay D. Smalls As a reader of Jim Harrison's novellas, I was very impressed with Weil's debut. Unlike a lot of collections you read, the three novellas here are actually very different from each other, mostly in terms of what actually happens in them, but also in the way they're told, the style of the writing (the third is a crazy narrative told from the point of view of a mentally handicapped man who has found himself in a dangerous love triangle), yet they are similar in all the right ways so that the book delivers a deeply felt portrait of bleak rural life, and packs a hell of an emotional punch. There are authors who seem to be able to really bring a place alive, to imagine something in such a real way that you just believe they know what they're talking about. Harrison does that, and one of my other favorites, Cormac McCarthy, does it, and Josh Weil does it too. The New Valley is a fully imagined book, with stunning descriptions and many breathtaking details, full of sad, haunted men, and it's obvious that Weil knows these people as well as he knows the land. Like Ethan Canin, Weil writes like a much older man. But he's obviously young enough to have just been named one of the "5 under 35" writers to watch by the National Book Awards people which, once you've read this, won't come as a surprise.

In this book, you get five short tales about the different couples and how they found their happily ever afters. I loved reading the different POV's and finding out the reasons behind why they acted the way they did. It answers all of those questions the reader may have had after reading the first book. It was well written and each story made me smile. I will definitely be reading more from this author.

Best PDF Ebook The Brains of Rats (Valancourt 20th Century Classics), by Michael Blumlein

When Michael Blumlein's debut collection The Brains of Rats (1990) first appeared, it marked the arrival of a major new talent, earning widespread acclaim from mainstream critics as well as genre stalwarts Peter Straub, Harlan Ellison, Pat Cadigan and many others. In the World Fantasy Award-nominated title story, a geneticist conflicted over his own sexuality, and the nature of male and female gender roles in general, proposes a drastic solution. The politically charged "Tissue Ablation and Variant Regeneration: A Case Report" describes in chilling detail a surgeon's evisceration of President Ronald Reagan. In "Bestseller," a struggling novelist unable to sell his books must sell something else unthinkably horrific in order to provide for his family. In these and the nine other startlingly original stories in this collection, Blumlein blurs the boundaries between horror, science fiction and fantasy, creating a strange and nightmarish world not unlike our own, where nothing is what it seems. This new edition features an introduction by bestselling horror novelist and screenwriter Michael McDowell. "Michael Blumlein is something new, a real original. I think he will have a great impact on the horror field, but I don't think anybody is going to be able to imitate him." - Peter Straub "Blumlein has an exceptional vision, and he conveys it with exceptional talent." - Washington Post "Blumlein's first collection signals the appearance of a major talent on the horror scene. Subtle and chilling." - Publishers Weekly "Blumlein is a powerful and highly original voice. He writes like his soul's on ice. Disturbing stuff. More please!" - Joe R. Lansdale "The Brains of Rats is blindingly brilliant. Blumlein is beyond any genre, a genuinely great writer." - Katherine Dunn, author of Geek Love "This is not a book for everyone. Only those who delight in splendid, original thinking and rich, pyrotechnical language need apply.... Mr. Blumlein carves enigmas and fabulous dark surprises from the magic mountain of his imagination." - Harlan Ellison "I didn't read these stories, I hallucinated them. I dare anyone to read Blumlein's work and come out the other side unchanged." - Pat Cadigan "Blumlein is an eclectic and daring writer, using experimental techniques and fragmented narrative to achieve spectacular results. The stories here are all disturbing and they all work - no small accomplishment for experimental fiction." - Locus

The Brains of Rats (Valancourt 20th Century Classics), by Michael Blumlein

Amazon.com Review "There's a . . . detachment that happens as a physician when you're dealing with frightening, horrifying, or sad events that you maintain an objectivity that's required, and I do that also when I write." When so many tales of the dark fantastic are told as if with exclamation marks, Dr. Michael Blumlein's sonorous, objective voice is refreshingly chilly. This collection of 12 elegantly crafted stories (first published in 1990) displays a range of subject matter defying categorization as science fiction, horror, or fantasy. The title story, nominated for a World Fantasy Award, is a provocative thought experiment about gender identity. Other topics include radical surgery with political intent, a child's flight into another realm, a technopunk romance, and various surreal excursions into minds obsessed with family secrets, hauntings, madness, poverty.

From Publishers Weekly The dozen stories in Blumlein's first collection signal the appearance of a major talent on the horror scene. Subtle and chilling in their spare suggestiveness, many of the short tales revolve around medical and surgical matters, but are not grossly gory. In "Tissue Ablation and Variant Regeneration: A Case Report," an extensive surgical procedure becomes a metaphor for Reaganomics at its cruelest. In a similar vein, "Bestseller" concerns a failed writer who is forced to sell off parts of his body to support his family. The title story, a 1987 World Fantasy Award nominee, examines the distress of a mad scientist torn by the contradictions of his own sexuality and by the amorphous nature of male and female sexual roles in general, for which he proposes a drastic solution. Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal An ambitious writer discovers a truly saleable commodity in "Bestseller," a new story which, together with 11 other titles previously published in periodicals, illustrates the highly visceral talent of the author of The Movement of Mountains (LJ 8/87). Though explicit descriptions of graphic sex and violence may limit the audience for these stories, this collection is recommended for libraries with a sophisticated readership.Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I picked a copy up at a local library - and i've never been so fascinated. Blumlein has a wonderful writing style and his stories are some of the most bizarre pieces of fiction ever. This is one of the best authors of dark fiction that I've ever found.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Unsettling but engrossing By Amazon Customer This is an extremely hard book to categorize; it's quite disturbing, teeming with unsettling visions of madness and aberration. That said, it's also quite engrossing, containing stories that worm their way into your brain, lingering in memory for quite some time.Blumlein has a medical background, which is very evident in the work presented here. "The Brains of Rats" features a geneticist who holds the fate of the world in his hands. "Tissue Ablation" and "Best Seller" both deal with organ harvesting, but veer off in wildly different directions. "The Thing Itself" is a tragic story of love between a doctor and nurse, so full of physical and mental anguish you'll feel exhausted after finishing. But Blumlein's talent goes beyond this, as demonstrated by the other stories in this collection. Highlights include "Wet Suit", an intriguing look at fetishism, "Keeping House", which demonstrates that cleanliness is not always next to godliness, "Domino Master", a moving look at child abuse, and "The Promise of Warmth", which would have made a memorable "Twilight Zone" episode (the story did in fact first appear in the late, lamented Twilight Zone magazine). The estimable Harlan Ellison said of The Brains of Rats, "This is not a book for everyone. Only those who delight in splendid, original thinking and rich, pyrotechnical language need apply...Mr. Blumlein carves enigmas and fabulous dark surprises from the magic mountain of his imagination." I wholeheartedly agree.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Stark, unflinching, brilliant By T. Hickman Who has a better position from which to observe the cruelties we inflict upon each other and ourselves, than a physician? Who is in a better position to view first-hand the human results of cold-blooded, morally vacant decisions made by people in power? If the physician is also cursed with having the vision to see his/her patients as more than a diseased organ, an out-of-place skeletal structure - the horror and irony must pile up fast, and doctors aren't supposed to lecture their patients on things other than the disorders they're presented with, as far as I know.Maybe these stories represent Dr. Blumlein's outlet for what is obviously his outrage at the infinite varieties of human cruelty. Certainly I agree with the other reviewer who says "Tissue Ablation and Variant Regeneration: A Case Report" is the most savagely satirical piece of fiction I have ever read; in addition to giving "Mr. Reagan" his foreign policy Just Desserts, I suspect there's more than a little wishful revenge for his deliberate attempt to abort any efforts at containing the ravages of AIDs in the early years, when thousands of lives could have been saved. For those reasons, this is my favorite story in the collection. But read them for their spot-on insights into human behavior; for their language, precise, cold as dry ice, and as searing. These are remarkable stories, and I've told everybody I know about them - but I do NOT loan out this book.
